Qualcomm Announces New First Small Base Station Based on 5G New Space Intermediary

Qualcomm announced that it will launch the first new small base station product based on 5G new air interface. It is expected to start sampling in 2019, demonstrating Qualcomm's high enthusiasm in the 5G field.

Qualcomm announced at the Small Cells World Summit in 2018 that it will launch the industry's first 5G new space intermediaries (5G NR) solution FSM100xx for small base stations and wireless broadband headend equipment, based on the previous launch of 3G and 4G small base stations. Market-recognized and built-in Qualcomm FSM platform, the new small base station products will be able to support 5G new air interfacing operation in millimeter wave and sub-6 GHz spectrum, designed to allow OEMs to repeat on sub-6 and millimeter wave products. The use of software and hardware design products to provide high-speed transmission and strong coverage for global mobile communication users, the high density of small base stations has not only occurred in the 4G era, but also expected to be a 5G network deployment in the future. Key elements, while the FSM100xx is able to take advantage of all 5G spectrum types and help the industry develop a strong and consistent 5G user experience.

The FSM100xx leverages Qualcomm's expertise in 10nm mobile technology to deliver superior power and performance while supporting critical outdoor deployments and demanding indoor network environments. Since the 5G new air interface uses higher frequency transmission characteristics (especially millimeter waves), the solution must provide a consistent 5G experience, especially in the context of most data transmission indoors. Thanks to our 5G mobile experience and technology accumulation, the FSM100xx solution can be further expanded to meet the various performance needs of outdoor small base stations, including support for MIMO implementation and gigabit-level throughput, as well as support for various indoors. Communication needs include small size and support for Power over Ethernet (PoE).

Irvind Ghai, vice president of product management at Qualcomm Atheros, a subsidiary of Qualcomm Technologies, said that Qualcomm is now leading the world to 5G and supporting 5G in the sub-6Hz band and mmWave spectrum by providing this 5G new space intermediate small base station solution. The new airspace plane is running and the small base station is expected to play a key role in the 5G network.

The Qualcomm FSM100xx solution is expected to begin sampling in 2019 and is currently working with customers who have used it early.
