China, Beijing - October 8, 2014 - Silicon Labs, a leader in high-performance analog and mixed-signal ICs, has announced the launch of Beta Thread software for pre-selected customers and ecosystem partners. This allows them to accelerate product development plans based on IP mesh networks. As one of the founders of the Thread Group organization, Silicon Labs has become a major contributor to the definition and development of the new IP mesh network software protocol stack for Connected Home.
Skip Ashton, vice president of software engineering at Silicon Labs, said, "We have developed the Thread network stack based on the latest draft standards and are already running on a multi-node network using our EM35xx wireless SoC's key customers. We are happy to launch Beta Software and ongoing investment in ZigBee® technology enhances our leadership in mesh networking solutions."
The rapid expansion of customer demand and Internet of Things (IoT) market applications led to the creation of the Thread network protocol, a new standards-based, IP addressable, low-power mesh network solution. As a founding member of the Thread Group, Silicon Labs continues to contribute mesh networking expertise and experience to provide software solutions that meet these market needs.
According to Mareca Hatler, Director of Research, ON World Inc., "As an industry-leading ZigBee SoC provider and innovator of wireless mesh networking technology, Silicon Labs has great advantages to drive the development of Thread software and continue to support the growing ZigBee device. A total of more than 45 million installations were made in 2013. Early adoption of the beta version of Thread software will enable the next generation of IP-based protocol stacks to be adopted by the IoT market earlier."
Silicon Labs is committed to providing best-in-class Thread and ZigBee-based connectivity solutions. The company plans to use a common ARM®-based wireless SoC portfolio to support both mesh network protocols and provide technology that enables current and future customers to deploy on these SoCs using simple OTA (over-the-air) upgrades. One or both of these software technologies.
