Qualcomm and OPPO reach new 3G and 4G China patent license agreement

On August 1st, Qualcomm and OPPO announced today that they have reached a new 3G and 4G China patent license agreement. Under the terms of the agreement, Qualcomm grants OPPO the development, manufacture and sale of paid patent licenses for 3G (WCDMA and CDMA2000) and 4G LTE (including "three-mode" GSM, TD-SCDMA and LTE-TDD) terminals.

Qualcomm senior vice president and general manager Alex Rogers said: "Qualcomm is pleased to sign this license agreement with OPPO. In addition to OPPO, there are currently more than 100 other Chinese companies and Qualcomm signed a license agreement, these agreements with Qualcomm to China The provisions of the rectification measures submitted by the National Development and Reform Commission of the People’s Republic are consistent."

Before Qualcomm filed a lawsuit because Meizu did not pay royalties, Qualcomm said Meizu infringed its 3G and 4G communication patents. The content of the patent license agreement that Qualcomm provides to Meizu is consistent with the terms of Qualcomm's 2015 rectification plan submitted to the China National Development and Reform Commission and approved by the National Development and Reform Commission.

However, Meizu used the "black box" as a reason to suggest that Qualcomm's patent fees were unfair and opaque.

In the first half of 2016, the patent litigation in the mobile phone field was upgraded: Huawei sued Samsung in the US and China; Samsung counterclaimed Huawei; Huawei sued T-Mobile, and Nokia filed a patent lawsuit against Huawei.

In this regard, Wang Yanhui predicted that the government will pay more and more attention to the protection of intellectual property rights in the next few years. The Chinese patent protection system will be as strict as Europe and the United States.
