The ideal DC link solution for automotive electrical drives

TDK-EPC has launched a new PCC (Block Power Capacitor) from EPCOS, which provides an ideal DC link solution for automotive electrical drives. The company has developed two models of B25655J4307K * 1 and B25655J4507K * 5 for the reference designs of HybridPACK 1 (20KW) and HybridPACK 2 (90KW) of IGBT inverters produced by Infineon Technology. This PCC can also be installed in Infineon's new evaluation assembly. Depending on the specific power output, the inverter module can be suitable for medium hybrid drive or all-electric drive applications. These modules are currently the only mass-produced solutions.

The characteristic of this power capacitor is that the volume fill factor is close to 1. Due to the use of low inductance bus bars, they are particularly suitable for installation in IGBT modules. The application of this product can omit the complicated installation procedures and buffer capacitors and symmetric resistors required by other capacitor technologies.


The above-mentioned PCC has a rated voltage of 450 V DC and capacitances of 300 and 500 μF. Another characteristic of them is that the equivalent series inductance is extremely low, below 15 and 25 nH, respectively. The maximum equivalent series resistance of all models is 1 mΩ. Its design working temperature is -40 ℃ to +110 ℃, and can be operated briefly at 125 ℃, with an average life of 15000 hours. Due to its self-healing function, it will not cause a short circuit or damage to the capacitor when the film breaks down due to overload. In addition to its excellent performance, the structure of this DC link capacitor is extremely compact, with dimensions of only 140 × 72 × 50 mm3 and 237 × 72 × 50 mm3, respectively.


Due to the firm and compact structure of capacitors manufactured using PCC technology, they are also very suitable for converters and inverters in optoelectronic industrial facilities that require extremely high space saving. The rated voltage of these capacitors can reach 1250 V DC, and with integrated bus bars, it has advantages over other capacitors in many applications.
